“I’m a relatively new member to AAUW, and I wish I’d found it decades ago. There’s so much to be proud of: AAUW has had the greatest impact of any non-profit on women’s rights and equality. With our Legal Action Fund, we’ve supported many things that impacted women in a historical way, such as Title IX. AAUW provided Marie Curie with over $100,000 id research funds when no one else would find her because she was a woman. at 130 years old, the accomplishments and reach of AAUW are great, and I wish more people knew of and participated in this great organization.”

This year’s book is Tell Them We Are Singing for Jesus: The Original Fisk Jubilee Singers and Christian Reconstruction, 1871-1878, by Dr. Toni Anderson. Dr. Anderson is professor of Voice and Chair of the Music Department at LaGrange College, GA. She didn’t know much about the Fisk Jubilee Singers until she started teaching at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, a historically black institution

“Being on the music faculty, of course the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers came up, and I was intrigued,” she said. She was so intrigued that she made the group the topic of her doctoral dissertation at Georgia State University. And now, 15 years later, she published the book.

The book tells the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Between 1871 and 1878, the Jubilee Singers presented concerts featuring the Negro spirituals that won the applause and admiration of the Western world. The rise and renown of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers form one of the most celebrated stories of post-Civil War America.

If you are interested in attending, call Joyce Hudson, Co-President and Treasurer at 478-745-8637. Joy Bernard can also tell you if there will be space. Call her at 478-714-1000.  The $40 book will be available for sale for the special price of $25 at the luncheon.

Paycheck Fairness Hearing Set

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions will finally hold a hearing on the Paycheck Fairness Act (S.182) on March 11. As AAUW members are quite aware, the Paycheck Fairness Act is a much needed updated of the 46-year-old Equal Pay Act. This comprehensive bill – which now has 37 Senate cosponsors – would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts. The bill would also deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations and by prohibiting retaliation against workers who ask about employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages. In short, the bill updates the law to reflect the practices and processes under more recent civil rights laws. Following the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act last year, passing the Paycheck Fairness Act is a logical next step forward in the fight for pay equity.

SB 182 was introduced in January 2009 by then Senator Hillary Clinton.

AAUW will be live blogging the hearing that day so even if you are working you can follow along with the proceedings on your computer or smartphone. You can even sign up for a reminder for the live blogging event on the AAUW website.
